Based on our research, there are more than 13k bus accidents every year – roughly 51% of which involve an injury and 1.3% of which result in a fatality.
To better understand bus accidents, our team researched where and why they happen, and how many people are injured or killed as a result.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) defines a bus as any motor vehicle designed to transport nine or more people, including the driver. As a result, the following statistics include school buses, cross country buses, transit buses, van-based buses, and "other types of buses" as defined by the FMCSA.
There were 13,452 bus accidents in 2024. 171 of these accidents were fatal for one or more persons involved.1
Texas had the most bus accidents in 2024. Florida, New York, Illinois, and California rounded out the top five.1

12,532 individuals were injured in a bus accident in 2024.1
Approximately 51% of bus accidents resulted in an injury in 2024. Out of the 13,452 accidents, 6,860 resulted in an injury.1
Note: The number of bus accidents resulting in an injury is lower than the number of individuals injured during a bus accident because multiple individuals can be injured in a single accident.
New York had the most bus accidents with injuries followed by Florida, Texas, Illinois, and California.1

203 people were killed in bus accidents in 2024.1
Roughly 16% of these fatalities were from occupants in buses involved in the accident.1
In 2024, 1.3% of bus accidents resulted in a fatality.1
Florida and Texas had the most fatal bus accidents in 2024 followed by New York, California, and Georgia.1
In 2022, there were 97 fatal bus accidents in the Unite States, which resulted in 104 fatalities.2
Only 7.7% of fatalities were school bus passengers. Rather, 73.1% of fatalities were occupants in other vehicles and 12.5% were pedestrians. The remaining fatalities were bikers (1.9%) and the school bus driver (3.8%).2
From 2013 to 2022, 24% of fatal accidents occurred at an intersection.2
In 2022, New York had the most fatal school bus accidents followed by California, North Carolina, and Texas.2
